Real world math problems require more than just calculations. Discussing what matters (mathematically), what doesn’t, and what additional information is necessary for a particular situation is interesting to students, and helps them solidify their thinking and connect ideas. See how letting students build the problem from a picture or a short video, and then creating some suspense, might increase levels of participation and enthusiasm in your classroom.
