Only a free person may teach about freedom!
Cycle 2 secondary students completing graduation requirements in math with mild to significant delays have been my share for the last 5 years within the 50% resource time allocated to mathematics at the high school level.  No workshops or readings could complete my 33 years teaching experience as much as this daily encounter with teenagers and young adults who live this status of deceptions in our mini-societies called schools. They decide day after day, without understanding why, to limit their learning to what they know is a meaningless minimum!

Teaching With Three-Act Math Tasks
Do you find that many students are lacking initiative and perseverance when it comes to solving Math problems?  We will look at how we might make math more visual and accessible.  Real world math problems require more than just calculations.  Discussing what matters (mathematically), what doesn’t, and what additional information is necessary for a particular situation is interesting to students, and helps them solidify their thinking and connect ideas.  See how letting students build the problem from a picture or a short video, and then creating some suspense, might increase levels of participation and enthusiasm in your classroom.

Barriers exist between students based on feeder schools, transportation, social skill level, perceived differences or difficulties, and other less easily identifiable markers. As a result, some students feel it impossible to find belonging within the school.  Learn the value of peer mentoring, discover program structure, and engage in activities used to promote connections amongst students.  You will leave with all the tools to start up a PEP Talks program at your school and create a community where all students feel attached.

After experiencing difficulties teaching new concepts to the many different levels of students in our math classes, we have now implemented the BUILD management system throughout all grades.  Students rotate through 4 ongoing centers: Buddy Games, Using Manipulatives, Independent Work, and Learning with Technology.  This allows teachers to meet leveled groups in  centers for small group instruction.  We cover math problems, common needs, review work, etc.  We will share how to set up, manage and fit the BUILD model into your math curriculum, as well as share examples of some of our students’ favourite activities.
